Efforts are underway to transform the Koti Chennaya Jodukare Kambala on January 25 in Moodbidri into a zero-waste event. Backed by Bengaluru-based NGO CDD and the Moodbidri Town Municipality (TMC), the initiative reflects a broader campaign promoting eco-friendly practices.

Sandhya A, Moodbidri TMC’s Swachhata ambassador, highlighted that the push for zero-waste kambala started two years ago under the guidance of TMC executive officer Indu M, with support from the elected body and MLA Umanath Kotiyan. She explained, “Zero waste means managing waste efficiently rather than completely avoiding its generation.” Public cooperation is essential, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, boxes, and tumblers. Proper dustbin usage is equally emphasized.

To boost engagement, a ‘Selfie with Alternatives’ contest has been introduced, rewarding participants who showcase eco-friendly alternatives. “Our goal is to make Moodbidri Kambala a national model,” Sandhya added. Gopal M, another Swachhata ambassador, emphasized the role of volunteers, pourakarmikas, and stall owners in ensuring effective waste collection and disposal.

Nagaraj Poojary, vice-president of Moodbidri TMC, reiterated the strict ban on single-use plastics and thermocol, urging stall operators to adopt sustainable materials like steel glasses, areca plates, and banana leaves. Collaborations with local cloth stores have produced 600 reusable bags for distribution.

With over a lakh attendees expected, waste generated will be composted into manure. Awareness campaigns, clear signage, and accessible dustbins will further support the zero-waste vision.
