Communal tensions and moral policing continue to plague Dakshina Kannada district, with incidents frequently emerging where young men and women from different faiths are targeted by extremist groups. These self-appointed vigilantes often harass, assault, and film such interactions to publicly shame the individuals involved. Both Hindu and Muslim fringe outfits are reportedly playing roles in perpetuating these divisive actions.
Official records from the Home Department show that 24 moral policing cases were registered in the past three years. However, activists believe this is just the tip of the iceberg. Many victims, fearing social backlash or further threats, choose not to report the harassment, enabling perpetrators to continue with impunity.
Year-wise breakdown of moral policing cases and accused:
-
2023: 15 cases | 15 accused
2024: 8 cases | 7 accused
2025 (so far): 2 cases | 0 accused
Although Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had pledged decisive action against moral policing when the Congress government came to power, the district—particularly Mangaluru—continues to witness such incidents, raising doubts about the efficacy of these promises.
Legislative Council member Ivan D’Souza highlighted the growing reluctance among young professionals to work in Dakshina Kannada, attributing it to the region’s reputation for intolerance. The Home Department denied any direct link but reassured the public of ongoing control measures.
Police initiatives to curb moral policing include:
-
Community peace meetings encouraging lawful action over vigilantism
Legal proceedings under security acts against offenders
Quick on-ground response and victim protection
E-beat systems and increased surveillance by police and intelligence staff
Still, the persistence of moral policing raises deep concerns about communal harmony and police effectiveness in the region.
