Mangalore: The Moras Charitable Trust, a philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting education and community welfare in Mangalore and surrounding areas, successfully hosted a scholarship distribution ceremony yesterday at the Kilenjaru Aramanjane Government High School in Kuppepadavu. The event, themed “Giving back to the Community,” aimed to honor and provide financial assistance to top-performing students from the 2024-25 SSLC examinations, as well as other deserving pupils, fostering educational opportunities for underprivileged youth.

The program commenced at 2:30 PM on August 26, 2025, with a heartfelt prayer song performed by the students, setting a tone of gratitude and inspiration. Mr. Balbir Shek Abdul M., the Head Master, delivered a warm welcome speech, followed by an introductory address from a committee member highlighting the Trust’s ongoing commitment to education.

Dignitaries and guests of honor graced the occasion, including Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras, Rev. Fr. Edwin Pinto (Parish Priest, Emirthur), Mr. Pravin Alva (President, Gram Panchayath Kuppepadavu), Smt. Vimal Kumar Girdhar (President, Gram Panchayath Mutturu), Mr. Mohd. Sharief Kale (Vice President), Mr. Sudeer Jain (SDMC President), Mr. Vijay Moras (Trustee), Mr. Joseph Moras (Trustee), and others. Messages of encouragement were shared by these leaders, emphasizing the importance of education in building stronger communities.

During his address, Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras, the President and Rev. Bishop, spoke inspiringly about Arunima Sinha, the first amputee to climb Mount Everest, who made a resolute commitment to achieve what seemed impossible. He emphasized that this same resolve is essential for students to accomplish goals that others might deem unattainable. Reiterating this message, he highlighted that instilling such resolve and motivation in young minds is the core intent of the Trust’s scholarship programs.

He also addressed pressing issues related to climate change, underscoring our collective responsibility toward the planet and the need to take proactive care of it. Drawing from his recent initiative in Mysore, where he launched the “Go Green, Keep Clean” campaign at a school, he extended the same importance to this school and the town of Kuppepadavu. Archbishop Moras expressed confidence that these children will one day surpass the Trust’s efforts and carry forward these initiatives to even greater heights.

A key highlight was the distribution of the Joseph Moras Financial Support and Honour awards to SSLC toppers from the 2024-25 academic year. Students were recognized for their academic excellence, with special honors bestowed upon standout performers. Additional financial support was extended to new honor students, parents, and select toppers, ensuring broader access to educational resources. Speeches from parents and students followed, expressing appreciation for the Trust’s initiatives.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. Reginald Moras, Smt. Tulasi, Smt. Usha, and Smt. Shetty (Asst. Teacher), followed by a national anthem and refreshments, leaving attendees inspired and hopeful for the future.

Founded in 2016 by the Moras family on the occasion of Archbishop Bernard Moras’ 75th birthday, the Moras Charitable Trust has been actively supporting education and community welfare for the last 9 years. This latest event continues the Trust’s legacy of promoting inclusivity, supporting students from diverse backgrounds, and contributing to societal upliftment. This is one way the Moras Charitable Trust is giving back to the community; in addition to scholarships, it has provided fees for the first term to students who couldn’t afford them, financial aid to individuals unable to repair their homes, and assistance to those struggling with hospital bills. The work is primarily carried out through John Cruz Moras and its other trustees.
