MP Brijesh Chowta demands NIA probe into murder of VHP activist Suhas Shetty
Mangaluru: In the wake of the brutal murder of VHP activist Suhas Shetty in Bajpe, Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the case. The murder, which occurred on the evening of May 1, has caused widespread outrage across the coastal region of Karnataka.
MP expresses deep concern over rising radicalism
In his letter to the Home Minister, Chowta described the murder as a “shocking and cold-blooded act” carried out openly in public view. He expressed “deep anguish and grave concern” over what he termed a growing pattern of Islamic radicalism and lawlessness in the region. According to him, Suhas Shetty’s killing is not an isolated incident but part of a broader trend that threatens peace and order.
“The incident has shaken the people of coastal Karnataka,” Chowta said, calling for urgent intervention to ensure justice and safeguard the region from extremist forces.
Draws parallels with Praveen Nettaru case
The MP drew a comparison between Shetty’s murder and the 2022 killing of BJP youth activist Praveen Nettaru, which was linked to members of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI). Chowta said there is reason to believe that similar radical elements may be involved in this recent case, underscoring the need for a central agency like the NIA to investigate.
He added that the family of Suhas Shetty is devastated and that the local community has lost confidence in the ability of the state police to impartially probe the matter.
Urges central intervention to uncover conspiracy
Chowta stressed that the NIA must not only investigate the perpetrators but also uncover the broader conspiracy, including financial backers and ideological supporters. “This is not merely a criminal incident—it reflects the growing threat of radical, anti-national, and jihadi forces,” he wrote.
He requested Home Minister Amit Shah to “personally intervene” in the case, ensuring that justice is delivered swiftly and that such forces are dismantled before they can further destabilise the region.
