Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday to thank the Centre for transferring the Suhas Shetty murder case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Chowta described the decision as a strong reflection of the government’s commitment to justice and national security.
Speaking on behalf of Shetty’s family and the local population, the MP hailed the Ministry of Home Affairs’ prompt action, saying it sends a reassuring message to law-abiding citizens while acting as a deterrent to extremist forces.
Chowta also raised alarms over the growing vulnerability of the coastal region to radicalisation, drug trafficking, and organised crime. He pointed to the recent MDMA drug bust in Mangaluru, the largest such seizure in Karnataka, as evidence of escalating threats.
He urged Amit Shah to consider setting up a permanent NIA office in Mangaluru, equipped with full capabilities to bolster intelligence coordination and ensure rapid response to emerging threats.
“Dakshina Kannada stands as a sentinel of India’s cultural and national values. We must not allow ideological subversion, violence, or narcotics to erode this foundation,” Chowta said.
He also drew parallels with Gujarat’s security transformation under PM Modi and Amit Shah in the early 2000s, voicing optimism that a similar model of integrated governance and security could be applied in the region to safeguard its stability and identity.
