Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has expressed serious concerns over the safety of women, contractors, businessmen, and cows under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka. Addressing the media at the BJP office on Thursday, Chowta cited alarming crime statistics released by the Karnataka Home Department.

In 2023, the state recorded 563 rape cases, including 178 in Bengaluru, and 6,462 cases of sexual harassment, with 1,321 in Bengaluru. Up to November 2024, 540 rape cases, including 166 in Bengaluru, and 5,873 sexual harassment cases, including 1,381 in Bengaluru, were reported. Cybercrimes led to a financial loss of ₹2,600 crore in 2024, Chowta added, asserting that Bengaluru is becoming the “crime capital” of Karnataka.

Chowta accused the Congress government of promoting illegal activities and extending indirect support to anti-social elements, terrorists, and anti-nationals. He claimed police stations have become hubs for Congress workers and alleged that losing Congress candidates in Dakshina Kannada are influencing decisions related to transfers, panchayats, and government matters.

Referring to cases of cow mutilation, Chowta criticized the government for failing to protect animals, alleging the “Fake Gandhians” have strayed from Mahatma Gandhi’s principles. He promised to raise these issues in the upcoming Lok Sabha sessions.

Meanwhile, Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty raised concerns over a pistol recovered in a recent gunshot incident, suspecting it might have been intended for an attack on Hindu leaders. He also hinted at the involvement of influential figures in the Kotekar cooperative bank heist.

Dismissing rumors of infighting within the BJP in Dakshina Kannada, both Chowta and Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath asserted the party remains united.
