MRPL doubles its Bitumen production capacity with the launch of a state-of-the-art unit, supporting India’s road infrastructure and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
A leap in Bitumen production
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has commissioned a new Bitumen production train, powered by the cutting-edge Biturox technology from Pörner, Austria, and designed by Engineers India Limited (EIL). This development marks a significant milestone for MRPL and India’s infrastructure sector.
The new unit boasts an annual production capacity of 1,50,000 metric tons, effectively doubling MRPL’s Bitumen output. This enhanced capacity positions MRPL as a key player in addressing India’s growing Bitumen demand, essential for road construction and economic development.
Addressing India’s infrastructure needs
India’s extensive highway network is vital to its development strategy. Bitumen, a critical component in road construction, has largely been sourced through imports due to rising demand. In 2022, MRPL embarked on an ambitious expansion plan to bridge this gap and reduce dependency on imports.
The newly launched unit in Mangalore is engineered to produce high-quality VG40 Bitumen, with the flexibility to manufacture VG30 and other grades based on market requirements. This ensures a consistent supply of superior-grade Bitumen for India’s road builders, fostering durable and sustainable infrastructure.
Supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat
This new facility aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by promoting self-reliance in critical sectors. Locally produced high-quality Bitumen will now cater to India’s road construction needs, reducing import dependency and enhancing economic self-sufficiency.
