Nanthoor Junction Traffic Eases With Road Widening And Pothole Asphalting

Recent road widening efforts and pothole asphalting at Nanthoor Junction have brought significant relief to the area, which was notorious for severe traffic congestion during peak hours. The expansion of both flanks of NH-66 now includes service roads, helping divert traffic and ensuring smoother flow. However, while the situation has improved, it’s not yet fully resolved.

The Nanthoor Junction, strategically located at a key intersection of NH-66 linking Kochi and Mumbai, has long been a critical point in Mangaluru. Despite its importance, the National Highways Authority of India failed to address the traffic issues that began in 2008 with the four-lane project by Mangalore Port Road Company. Over the years, this oversight led to increased accidents and wasted time for commuters.

Traffic East police inspector Anand E notes that the asphalting has significantly reduced waiting times, with traffic now flowing faster. Previously, long queues stretched for miles at Bikarnakatte and KPT sides, and half a kilometer on the Pumpwell and Kadri sides. Now, wait times have been slashed by over half. With the widening of NH-66 and the introduction of service roads, left turns from KPT-Padavu to Bikkarnakatte and from Bikkarnakatte to Pumpwell have become much easier.

Traffic constable Sharat also highlights the improved flow, though he points out occasional gridlocks caused by large vehicles, such as gas tankers and container trucks, which still take time to navigate the roundabouts. Anand adds that the lack of traffic signals necessitates continued deployment of personnel to prevent further traffic jams until the full vehicular overpass (VoP) project is completed.
