NDRF and SDRF teams deployed in Dakshina Kannada amid red alert rains
With Dakshina Kannada witnessing heavy and persistent rainfall, disaster preparedness efforts have been ramped up with the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams across the district, as confirmed by Dr. K. Anand, Deputy Commissioner In-charge.
One NDRF unit is being sent to Puttur, while SDRF teams are stationed in Mangaluru and Subramanya, equipped with essential tools and machinery to handle natural calamities. The SDRF team has already arrived and is on standby.
During a virtual meeting with district officials, the DC directed all urban and rural local body heads to remain on high alert, coordinate closely with Taluk authorities and key departments like MESCOM and the Forest Department, and prioritize the prevention of loss of life. JCBs and rescue boats are to be kept ready, and unsafe Anganwadi and school rooms are to be demolished before school reopening.
With a red alert issued for five days by the Meteorological Department, special attention is being given to accident-prone areas. Dr. Anand also instructed the National Highways Authority to urgently address complaints about NH construction disrupting residential zones and granted permission for fishing boats seeking shelter to dock at the New Mangalore Port Authority.
The meeting saw participation from Tahsildars and officials from all key departments, reflecting a district-wide coordinated response to the looming threat of rain-related disasters.
