A decade-old market in Urwa Store, located just a kilometre from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) office, is in a state of neglect, lacking basic facilities. Merchants selling fish, vegetables, groceries, and other items face significant inconveniences, and customers suffer due to the absence of a proper market building.

A delegation of merchants, led by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), submitted a memorandum to the MCC, seeking the upgradation of the Urwa Store market. DYFI functionary Rajesh Kulal highlighted the market’s dilapidated condition, noting that residents have repeatedly expressed concerns over the MCC’s inaction. Despite submitting several memorandums and holding numerous protests, the MCC has not initiated any development plans for the market.

Sukesh, another leader, emphasized the lack of basic amenities. He pointed out that hundreds of people visit the market daily, which does not even have a roof, leaving merchants to conduct business in challenging conditions, especially during the rainy season. Moreover, there are no public washrooms or toilets for customers and merchants.

The DYFI urges the MCC to redevelop the Urwa Store market, providing essential facilities for both merchants and the general public. Constructing a public toilet near the market is also a priority.
