Mangaluru: The 9th ONGC–MRPL International Kite Festival will be held on January 17 and 18, 2026, as part of the vibrant Karavali Utsava celebrations, with the scenic Blue Bay Beach, Tannirbavi, selected as the new venue. The festival is being organised by Team Mangalore, a passionate collective of kite enthusiasts, to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Dakshina Kannada and the spirit of Tulunadu.
The curtain-raiser ceremony for the festival was held on January 10 in Mangaluru and was jointly conducted by Siddaramaiah, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, and D. K. Shivakumar, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister. The ceremony marked the official launch of one of coastal Karnataka’s most awaited cultural and tourism events.
Leaders and officials grace curtain-raiser
Several senior leaders and officials were present on the occasion, underlining the importance of the festival in promoting tourism and cultural exchange. Those in attendance included H. K. Patil, Minister for Tourism; U. T. Khader, Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly; Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister for Health and Family Welfare; Laxmi Hebbalkar, Udupi District In-charge Minister; and Darshan H. V., Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.
Elected representatives Gurme Suresh Shetty and Ivan D’Souza were also present, along with senior officials and members of Team Mangalore.
New venue adds coastal charm
For the first time, the international kite festival will be hosted at Blue Bay Beach, Tannirbavi, offering expansive open skies and a picturesque coastal backdrop. Organisers said the new venue would enhance the visual spectacle of colourful kites soaring above the Arabian Sea, while providing ample space for participants and visitors.
The choice of Tannirbavi aligns with ongoing efforts to showcase Mangaluru’s beaches as prime cultural and tourism destinations, complementing established attractions highlighted regularly on Newskarnataka.com.
International participation and cultural exchange
The festival will feature a strong contingent of around 60 kite flyers from India and abroad, bringing together diverse styles, techniques, and artistic traditions of kite flying. Participants are expected from various Indian states as well as international destinations, adding a global flavour to the event.
Organisers said the festival promises a blend of tradition, creativity, and international camaraderie, reflecting the inclusive cultural ethos of Tulunadu. In addition to competitive and display flying, visitors can expect themed kite shows and interactive sessions with expert flyers, celebrating the art and joy of Kite festival traditions.
Boost to Karavali Utsava and tourism
As a flagship event under Karavali Utsava, the kite festival plays a significant role in drawing tourists, families, and photography enthusiasts to the coastal belt. Officials noted that such large-scale cultural events help extend visitor stays, benefit local businesses, and strengthen Mangaluru’s profile on the national cultural map.
Team Mangalore said preparations are underway to ensure smooth logistics, safety, and an engaging experience for both participants and spectators. Food stalls, cultural activities, and family-friendly spaces are also expected to be part of the festival atmosphere.
Celebrating the spirit of Tulunadu
The ONGC–MRPL International Kite Festival has, over the years, grown into a symbol of community participation and cultural pride. By combining local traditions with international participation, the 9th edition aims to reinforce Dakshina Kannada’s identity as a region that celebrates heritage while embracing global connections.
With clear skies, steady coastal winds, and a festive mood, the January 17–18 event at Tannirbavi is expected to be a visual highlight of Karavali Utsava 2026.
