Onion prices, which recently surged, are now on the decline as Christmas and New Year celebrations draw near. Traders attribute this reduction to the arrival of new onions in the market. Initially, the new onions had high moisture content and would spoil quickly, causing consumers to prefer older onions, priced at Rs 70-75 per kg. However, with the old onions beginning to sprout, there has been a shift towards purchasing better-quality new onions.
Over the past week, onion prices have dropped to Rs 55 per kg and are expected to continue falling. Stockists who had hoarded onions, anticipating a price increase due to heavy rains, are now concerned about potential losses.Meanwhile, the price of eggs has risen to Rs 7.50 per piece, with wholesale prices ranging from Rs 6.70 to Rs 7. The demand for eggs remains high, especially for cake-making during the festive season.Vegetable prices are fluctuating, partly due to the ongoing Sabarimala season. While potato prices have decreased to Rs 40 per kg, beans and okra, which were previously priced at Rs 60 per kg, have surged to Rs 90-100. Beetroot is now priced at Rs 70-80 per kg, while gherkins have jumped from Rs 60 to Rs 100 per kg. Cucumber prices have also doubled, rising from Rs 30 to Rs 60 per kg, with other vegetables following a similar upward trend.Read also
