Operation Tiger back in action, illegal footpath vendors to be moved
Mangaluru: Operation Tiger, a fresh initiative to remove illegal footpath vendors, was launched again in the city on Saturday. The operation was executed by officials from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), in collaboration with the local police, focusing on the State Bank bus stand area. Over 40 street vendors operating along the roadside were forced to vacate the premises. Despite the authorities’ actions, street vendors strongly resisted and even threatened to protest.
Mayor Manoj Kumar emphasized that such drives will continue across the city, stressing the need for order in public spaces. He explained that over 100 vendors have already been issued identity cards to operate within the designated street vending zone near the bus stand. However, many vendors continue to conduct business outside this area, prompting the MCC to carry out the drive.
While the MCC claims that adequate facilities have been provided within the vending zone, Mayor Kumar pointed out that those who have complied and shifted inside are suffering losses due to competition from those still operating outside. He warned that the identity cards of authorized vendors could be revoked if they violate the terms and conditions.
On the other hand, BK Imthiyaz, Honorary President of the Street Vendors Association, voiced concerns about the suitability of the vending zone for business. He condemned Operation Tiger and demanded the return of seized goods from the vendors.
