Mangaluru – Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara visited the under-construction Mangaluru District Jail site in Bantwal taluk on Friday and instructed officials to expedite the pending work. He also asked the department to send an official proposal to secure ₹87 crore for completing the project.

MLC Ivan D’Souza, who accompanied the minister, stated that the total cost to complete the jail building, compound wall, and staff quarters is estimated at ₹110 crore. “The minister’s visit aimed at facilitating the early relocation of the jail from its current location in Kodialbail to Bantwal. He has assured immediate steps to release ₹87 crore for the building and compound wall, with the staff quarters to be taken up in a later phase,” D’Souza explained.

The project, which began in 2019, has seen cost overruns due to delays. The home minister questioned why the jail building construction started before the compound wall was in place and urged for quick action on sanitary and electrical installations.

Parameshwara also inspected the current jail premises at Kodialbail, where he noticed two mobile jammers were non-functional. He directed authorities to replace them with upgraded jammers that work effectively within jail boundaries without affecting nearby residents.

Additionally, jail officials requested increased staffing. Responding to this, the minister instructed Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy to carry out surprise checks at the old jail to curb unlawful activities.
