Mangaluru: Kadri Park in Mangaluru came alive on Sunday as 151 dogs from over 20 breeds, including Miniature Pinscher, Shih Tzu, Caravan Hound, Chihuahua, and Belgian Malinois, participated in a vibrant dog show. Organized by the Zilla Panchayat and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services as part of the Karavali Utsava, this event marked the first show in five years.
Dog enthusiasts from Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Kasargod, and Udupi thronged the park to cheer for their furry friends. The competition featured categories for puppies (3–6 months, 6 months–1 year) and adults (above 1 year), with winners competing in a final championship round offering cash prizes and trophies.
First-time participant Sachin Krishnappa brought his one-year-old Shih Tzu, while Preetham showcased his seasoned seven-year-old Rottweiler, “Happy.” Vamshi introduced her playful Maltese duo, “Ivy” and “Cookie,” to the arena. Sukesh Shetty’s four-month-old Caravan Hound, “Mia,” clinched gold in the puppy category during her debut outing.
Adding diversity, Avinand Achanahally’s Belgian Malinois, “Samba,” who guards horses at his academy, won a prize. Other breeds like Akita, Toy Pom, Dalmatian, Poodle, and American Bully graced the event.
Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry, praised the participants and the judging, which assessed dogs on breed standards, movement, temperament, and condition. A thrilling demonstration by the DK and Mangaluru commissionerate dog squad rounded off the day.
