Mangaluru: In an unexpected turn in the bomb scare case at a private hospital in Deralakatte, the Ullal police have apprehended a postgraduate medical student for allegedly orchestrating a fake bomb threat to avoid giving a seminar.

On June 4, around 8:45 am, the hospital received five alarming calls claiming that a bomb had been planted on the premises. The anonymous caller’s warnings triggered panic among hospital staff, patients, and visitors.

A full-scale security operation followed, involving 25 to 30 police officers, a bomb disposal unit, and sniffer dogs. For nearly 10 hours, officials combed through the hospital building, parking area, and nearby surroundings — but no explosives were found.

Ironically, the police complaint had been filed by Dr. Chalasani Monika Chowdhary, a PG medical student, who initially posed as a victim of the threat. A case was registered under Sections 352(2) and 352(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

However, during the technical probe, police uncovered that Dr. Monika herself was behind the hoax. It is suspected that she staged the bomb threat to avoid presenting a seminar scheduled for that day.

The police arrested her on June 7, and the mobile phone used to make the threatening calls has been seized as evidence. Ullal police have confirmed that further investigation is in progress to uncover additional details.
