Mangaluru’s Pilikula Biological Park recently welcomed an exciting addition of animals through a unique exchange program with the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha. The newly arrived animals include a six-year-old Asiatic lion, a wolf, two gharial crocodiles, and four exotic birds — specifically, two silver pheasants and two yellow-golden pheasants. This exchange, approved by the Central Zoo Authority, marks a significant step in enhancing the zoo’s collection and conservation efforts.

According to Park Director H. Jayaprakash Bhandary, Pilikula Zoo will send four wild dholes (Indian wild dogs), four rare reticulated pythons, two Brahminy kites, three Asian palm civets, and two large egrets to Nandankanan in return. Notably, the animals from Pilikula were all zoo-born, which helps in preserving native bloodlines and providing companionship for animals at both locations.

The Asiatic lion joins Pilikula’s current population of three lions, addressing the low number of these male lions in Indian zoos and enhancing the park’s genetic diversity. The animals were transported over 2,000 kilometers — the farthest exchange distance in Pilikula’s history. Two veterinary officers and a team of eight caretakers accompanied the animals to ensure their safe arrival.

In addition to boosting visitor interest, the exchange program aims to support the zoo’s goal of self-sustainability. Pilikula Zoo plans to add even more species in the future, including Humboldt penguins and anacondas, which will require specialized enclosures. These new attractions are expected to increase the zoo’s revenue and attract donors willing to support unique projects.

The newly arrived animals will be in quarantine for 15 days, receiving necessary vaccinations and acclimatizing to their new environment, before going on display.
