Mangaluru: A police head constable posted at Kadaba Police Station has been suspended after he allegedly trespassed into a house and assaulted a family member at Koyila in Kadaba. The incident, which occurred late on the night of 3 December, has raised serious questions about police conduct and accountability within the local force.

According to the complaint filed by Babu Gowda (53), a resident of Koyila, loud noises were heard from the nearby house of his brother, Harish. When he rushed to check on the situation, he found that the family members had already apprehended an unidentified man inside the house. What followed, as narrated in the complaint, revealed a startling turn of events.

Family confronts intruder

The intruder, who appeared to have entered the house without permission, allegedly attempted to escape when confronted by the family. During this attempt, he is accused of assaulting a family member, Chetan, using his hand. The family, however, managed to restrain him and demanded to know his identity.

To their surprise, the man revealed himself as Raju Naik, a Head Constable attached to the Kadaba Police Station. His alleged involvement in trespassing and assault has shocked residents in the area, many of whom are now questioning the conduct and discipline within the local police department.

The family immediately informed the authorities, following which a case was registered at the Kadaba Police Station itself.

Case registered under BNS provisions

Police have registered a case under Sections 329(3), 115(2), and 331(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These sections pertain to offences involving trespass, assault, and unlawful actions that cause harm or pose a threat to individuals.

Legal experts indicate that, if proven guilty, the suspended constable could face significant disciplinary action as well as criminal charges. The invocation of multiple BNS provisions signals the seriousness of the allegations.

Officer taken into custody for interrogation

Following the registration of the case, the accused head constable, Raju Naik, was taken into custody for interrogation. Police sources confirmed that he is being questioned regarding the circumstances that led to his presence inside the private residence late at night and the subsequent assault allegation.

Authorities have stated that the interrogation will determine whether the act was intentional, whether any external factors influenced his behaviour, or whether there were other motives behind his alleged trespass.

Senior officers from the Kadaba subdivision have declined to comment on the ongoing inquiry but assured that the investigation will be impartial and thorough.

Suspension issued with immediate effect

The police department moved swiftly in issuing a suspension order against Naik. Officials stated that maintaining public trust is a priority, and any misconduct—especially from a member of the police force—must be dealt with transparently and firmly.

A senior official remarked that suspension during investigation is standard protocol in such situations. It ensures that the accused officer does not influence witnesses or interfere with the inquiry.

Residents express concern

Residents of Koyila and surrounding areas have expressed concern over the incident. Many were taken aback that a head constable could be involved in such an act. Some locals have demanded stricter monitoring of police personnel and periodic evaluations of their conduct, especially in rural stations where oversight is comparatively limited.

Community members stated that action against misconduct must serve as a deterrent, reinforcing that law enforcers cannot act above the law.

Investigation continues

Police have said that further investigation is in progress. Statements from the complainant, family members, and other witnesses are being recorded. Forensic and procedural details of the alleged trespass are also expected to be examined.

Once the investigation is completed, the final report will be submitted to the court, after which the judicial process will take over.

For now, the police department maintains that the suspension and ongoing custody are part of the due process, ensuring accountability and fairness.

Conclusion

The incident has sparked discussions about the responsibility and ethical conduct expected from police officers. As the investigation unfolds, authorities emphasise that no individual, regardless of position, will be shielded from legal scrutiny. The case is expected to progress in the coming days, offering more clarity on the circumstances leading to the alleged misconduct.
