PWD Prioritizes Construction of 21 Footbridges in DK Amid Safety Concerns

In response to the urgent need for safer pedestrian infrastructure, the Public Works Department (PWD) has prioritized the construction of 21 footbridges (kalusankas) across Dakshina Kannada. This project, estimated to cost Rs 3.4 crore, will address the critical safety risks posed by the current use of makeshift footbridges, such as wooden logs and areca palm trees, especially during heavy rains.

Amarnath Jain HP, Executive Engineer of the PWD in Dakshina Kannada, stated that the proposal for these footbridges has been developed due to the emergency situation. The kalusankas will be constructed in various constituencies, with each constituency receiving between one to four footbridges. These structures are particularly essential in areas frequented by school and college students and connect over 30 houses.

In addition to the 21 priority footbridges, the PWD has identified approximately 300 other locations where traditional wooden logs or concrete beams are used. The replacement of these makeshift structures will be carried out in phases, with each kalusanka costing between Rs 12 to Rs 16 lakh. The proposal has been submitted to the district administration and government for approval.

Residents have long faced life-threatening risks during the monsoon season due to inadequate crossing options. Makeshift bridges often lead to dangerous conditions, with villagers, including young children, navigating treacherous crossings. The PWD’s initiative aims to provide a permanent solution and enhance safety for the local communities.
