The Radio Park Samrakshana Vedike has appealed to authorities to reopen the historic Radio Park at Urwa Store, which has remained closed for nearly a decade.
Vedike convener Uday Achar emphasized that this 80-year-old landmark, once a hub of recreation and information, served as a vital gathering space for the community. Situated atop a hill, Radio Park, also known as Radio Hill, provided a peaceful retreat for both senior citizens and children. He urged officials to restore and enhance the park, ensuring it functions as an eco-friendly space for both residents and birdlife.
Over time, the park’s expanse has shrunk due to new constructions, including the Ambedkar Bhavan, causing a lack of green spaces for the locals. The remaining 60 cents of land could be transformed into a modern recreational zone, offering much-needed fresh air and relaxation.
With over 1,000 households in the vicinity, reopening Radio Park would greatly benefit the entire neighborhood. Longtime visitors like Merlin Martis, KA Rohini, Suresh Kamath, Anand Baptist, Vivek Shettar, and Praveen recalled how the park was once a vibrant space for leisure and social interactions.
Residents hope authorities will act swiftly to redevelop this once-thriving landmark, bringing back its lost charm.
