Restart of Punjalkatte-Charmadi National Highway Work Brings Hope to Commuters
Mangaluru: The long-delayed Punjalkatte-Charmadi national highway project has resumed, according to Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta. On Sunday, the MP confirmed that after continuous follow-up meetings over the past two months, work on the highway has recommenced under the back-to-back model of National Highway development, with Mugrody Constructions from D P Jain appointed as the contractor.
MP Chowta, who visited the ongoing work at Kashibettu in Belthangady with Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja and department officials, announced that discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari are scheduled for August 13. The contractor has been instructed to make the stretch motorable within the next month, with further work to follow according to the project timeline.
The completion of this road is expected to boost tourism in the taluk, as highlighted by MLA Harish Poonja. Currently, incomplete work and recent rains have led to severe inconvenience for commuters, particularly those traveling to Dharmasthala, Sauthadka, Surya Temple, and Gadayikallu. The unfinished road, which has cost Rs 714 crore, is plagued by slushy conditions, potholes, and frequent blockages, creating significant challenges for vehicle owners and resulting in accidents for two-wheeler riders.
Residents and daily commuters have expressed frustration over the hazardous conditions, urging for swift action to complete the project and restore safe travel.
