Mangaluru police have arrested eight individuals for the murder of Bajrang Dal member and history-sheeter Suhas Shetty, revealing that the act was a revenge killing linked to the 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil. Shetty, police say, was the prime accused in Fazil’s murder and also suspected in a 2023 attack on Abdul Safwan, who is believed to be the mastermind behind this retaliatory plot.

The arrested include drivers, masons, and salesmen, showcasing the diverse backgrounds of those involved. They are:

  • Abdul Safwan (29) and Niyaz (28) of Shantigudde,

  • Mohammed Muzamil (32) of Kenjar,

  • Kaladhar Shafi (31) of Kursugudde,

  • Ranjith (19) and Nagraj (20) of Kalasa,

  • Mohammed Rizwan (28) of Jokatte,

  • and Adil Maharoof, Fazil’s brother.

  • On May 1, Shetty was attacked near Bajpe bus stand. Assailants in a Swift and a Bolero pickup intercepted his vehicle and fatally assaulted him using blunt weapons. Shetty had five criminal cases against him.

Commissioner Anupam Agrawal said the attack was meticulously planned, with Rs 5 lakh promised for the hit — Rs 3 lakh was paid in advance. Previous attempts to kill Shetty had failed. Rented vehicles and a well-connected group helped execute the plan.

Viral footage of burqa-clad women is under investigation; they’re believed to be relatives of one accused.
