Mangaluru: Coastal erosion driven by relentless high tides and heavy rain has intensified along the shores of Ullal, Someshwara, Uchila, Battapady, and surrounding regions, leaving residents on edge as their homes teeter on the brink of destruction.

In response to the worsening situation, local authorities have relocated nearly 200 families to safer locations. Mathadi, the Ullal City Municipal Commissioner and Chief Officer of Someshwar Town Municipal Council, stated that the extreme weather has caused widespread flooding, severely damaging at least eight homes in Ullal and two in Someshwar. Additionally, coastal roads have been washed away, further isolating affected areas.

Former Someshwar TMC president Rajesh Uchila noted that erosion has worsened over the years, and residents are now facing a new level of uncertainty. “Despite crores of rupees being spent on temporary coastal protection, the damage persists,” he said, urging the government to take long-term, sustainable action instead of short-term fixes.

Assembly Speaker UT Khader addressed the crisis recently, announcing that the state has sanctioned ₹70 crore for permanent solutions. He emphasized that plans will be finalised in consultation with fishermen, residents, and coastal experts, acknowledging that sea behaviour differs from location to location.

As the sea continues to encroach, locals are demanding swift, science-backed, and community-informed interventions to safeguard life and property.
