Mangaluru: A comprehensive ₹165 crore proposal for the development of Pilikula Nisargadhama was presented before the Karnataka legislature’s committee on subordinate legislation. The proposal aims to enhance infrastructure, safety, and tourism at the eco-tourism destination.

A meeting chaired by committee chairman Shivanna took place at the Zilla Panchayat office on February 19. Concerns were raised over the zoo’s maintenance, with members highlighting the need for improved upkeep. Shivanna directed the deputy commissioner to prepare a detailed report on the proposed plans.

Committee member Dr. Seetharam mentioned that discussions with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and relevant ministers would take place, but implementation could take 3–4 years due to the pre-approved budget.

Key suggestions included appointing a director for the Pilikula Development Authority, assigning an ACF-cadre officer to manage the zoo, and temporary measures to enhance its administration. The committee also considered transferring Pilikula Zoo’s management to the Karnataka Zoo Authority.

Dr. Seetharam proposed revising children’s entry fees and reviewing staff salary scales. To boost tourism, Shivanna recommended cultural programs and statewide promotion. Tourism department secretary Salma Faheem suggested incorporating Pilikula into the Karnataka Darshana program for SC/ST students.

Officials including Dr. Trilok Chandra, MLC Manjunath Bhandary, and Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. Anand, along with other committee members, participated in the discussions.
