Operational safety measures at Mangaluru International Airport are gaining momentum with renewed focus on establishing an additional ‘runway safety basic strip’. This designated area runs parallel to the runway and enhances the margin of safety during landings, take-offs, or in the event of an aircraft veering off course.
Currently, a 140-metre-wide strip exists on one side. However, to comply fully with norms, 32.97 acres are required to replicate the strip on the opposite side. Unlike the ‘runway end safety area’ (RESA), which already meets regulatory standards at both runway ends, this strip extends laterally from the runway’s centreline.
The airport, managed by Mangaluru International Airport Ltd (MIAL) under the Adani Group since October 30, 2020, functions through a public-private partnership with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). MIAL had calculated the additional land required for safety compliance.
Progress has been noted. On February 6, the Civil Aviation Ministry informed Parliament that the Karnataka government was requested to transfer the land to AAI free of cost. However, the state did not agree, citing the airport’s PPP status. The Ministry later advised AAI to resolve the issue based on guidelines from the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority to maintain safety without affecting user charges.
MP Capt Brijesh Chowta recently shared updates on steps being taken toward land acquisition. The state is now ready to assist in the process, and a formal acquisition order is expected shortly.
Local business leaders welcomed the move, citing improved safety and reduced flight disruptions in adverse weather.
