With temperatures soaring beyond 35°C for weeks, the city is reeling under an unforgiving heatwave. The midday sun, especially between 12 PM and 3 PM, turns the outdoors into a furnace. While people find relief in shade and cool drinks, stray animals and birds struggle to find water, leaving many weak and dehydrated.

Limited water sources in urban areas make survival even harder for these creatures. Citizens can help by placing water bowls in open spaces, ensuring animals and birds stay hydrated. Simple efforts like scattering grains and keeping cattle in shaded areas can significantly ease their distress.

The animal husbandry department has issued vital guidelines for poultry farmers, stressing round-the-clock clean water supply, as even an hour without it can be fatal. Methods like using lime-coated roofs and palm leaf coverings help reduce heat stress in poultry sheds. Supplementing birds with Vitamin C and electrolytes is also advised.

To combat dehydration among strays, activist Tausif Ahmed has launched a campaign, distributing over 100 cement water bowls across the city. Holding five litres each, these bowls are placed near shops and terraces, with residents encouraged to keep them refilled.

Through collective action, the city can protect its vulnerable wildlife from the blistering summer heat.
