Silent strength through coastal churches on Good Friday
On Thursday, April 18, churches across Udupi and Mangaluru were enveloped in solemn reverence as Christians gathered to mark Good Friday, reflecting deeply on the crucifixion and immense suffering of Jesus Christ.
From the early hours, congregations joined in the Way of the Cross, a devotional reenactment of Jesus’ final path to Calvary. The ritual evoked a collective sense of sorrow and gratitude as worshippers walked in solemn silence, retracing Christ’s last moments.
Throughout the day, churches witnessed large turnouts for the liturgical services, which included scripture readings, prayers, and the veneration of the cross. The ceremonies were steeped in introspection, with clergy guiding the faithful through reflections on love, sacrifice, and redemption.
At Milagres Cathedral in Kallianpur, Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo led the service, urging believers to seek strength in Christ’s suffering and embody virtues of mercy, humility, and forgiveness in their lives.
Guardian Angel Church in Angelore observed the day with heartfelt devotion. The service, led by Fr Stany Fernandes alongside Fr Fedrick Monteiro and Deacon Jeevan Lobo, encouraged the faithful to contemplate the depth of Christ’s love as demonstrated on the cross.
At Our Lady of Miracles Church, Hampankatta, the spirit of Good Friday was equally poignant, drawing people into deep reflection.
As one of Christianity’s most sacred days, Good Friday ushers in the Easter Triduum, leading to the joyous celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
