At the inauguration of a three-day national workshop on ‘Kannada Media Field—Opportunities and Skills’ at Mangalore University, Niranjan Vanalli, Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore North University, stressed that while media expertise is critical, upholding ethical values and social responsibility is equally vital.

Vanalli highlighted that today’s media landscape offers abundant career paths, but excelling requires mastering language fluency, writing finesse, and clear communication. He stated, “Language is our power, and writing is our tool. Those who fail to grasp the nuances of expression and interpretation cannot succeed in this profession.”

He pointed out that the media sector now spans beyond conventional journalism to include event planning, advertising, and public relations, offering diverse job prospects. However, he voiced concern over inadequate journalist remuneration, warning that low pay deters talented youth from joining the industry.

Mangalore University Registrar K Raju Mogaveera likened journalists to modern-day historians, underscoring the significance of truth, transparency, and ethical duty. University Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma, who presided over the event, also echoed the necessity of language strength and moral compass for media professionals.

The workshop includes expert-led sessions such as ‘Feature Writing: Language and Style’ by Vanalli, ‘Writing Language and Sensitivity’ by Narendra Rai Derla, and ‘Press Photography: Current Challenges’ by Astro Mohan.

Organised by the SVP Kannada Adhyayana Sanstha, the event is backed by the Prime Minister’s Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM USHA) scheme, aiming to educate aspiring media professionals on both technical skills and responsible storytelling.
