Social media storm and street violence erupt after Suhas Shetty murder in Mangaluru
Following the murder of rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty near Kinnipadavu, unrest has gripped Mangaluru. Inflammatory social media posts threatening communal peace have led police to register multiple cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 across several stations.
Mulki police booked two cases targeting a YouTuber and an Instagram account. Mangaluru North police acted against a social media post announcing a district-wide bandh in protest. Urwa police registered cases against two Instagram profiles for allegedly promoting hate and unlawful acts.
Barke, Moodbidri, and Mangaluru South police followed suit, filing cases against several Instagram users. Kavoor police booked two cases against a YouTuber and another Instagram account. Cases were also lodged at Kankanady Town and Mangaluru East stations over provocative posts.
The bandh triggered by online mobilisation led to violence in the city. Stone-pelting incidents were reported at Kankanady, Karavali Grounds, and KB Katte. At Kadri, five KSRTC buses were damaged by miscreants. Similar attacks occurred in Barke and Mangaluru North areas, targeting both public and private buses.
In a separate series of assaults possibly linked to the Bajpe incident, Kankanady police registered a case where a man was stabbed by three individuals. In Ullal, two men on a bike tried attacking a scooterist. In Konchady, Kavoor police booked a case after six men in an Innova abused and assaulted a man.
Police are actively investigating all incidents and have increased surveillance to deter further unrest.
