Mangaluru: As persistent heavy rains continue to batter the coastal belt, authorities have imposed a speed limit of 50 km/h on the Surathkal–Nanthoor Junction stretch of National Highway-66 to enhance road safety.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented the restriction under the National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, and it will remain in effect until the end of September. Continuous rainfall has deteriorated the road condition, with multiple stretches sustaining damage and becoming accident-prone.

NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi urged caution, especially in areas like Panambur, Surathkal, and Baikampady. He recommended that two- and three-wheelers utilize service roads where available to reduce congestion on the main carriageway.

Due to waterlogged and potholed roads, both heavy and light vehicles are making abrupt swerves to avoid hazards, increasing the likelihood of mishaps. The advisory is aimed at minimizing such risks and ensuring smoother, safer traffic flow during the monsoon period.

Authorities are appealing to the public to adhere strictly to the revised speed norms and cooperate with ongoing safety measures.
