Mangaluru: The Unified University and College Management System (UUCMS), introduced by Karnataka’s higher education department in 2021, has been a source of stress for students due to persistent technical issues.
During his 16th state budget presentation on Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a ₹30 crore upgrade for UUCMS to enhance its effectiveness. While university authorities welcomed the decision, student concerns remain.
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.L. Dharma called the move beneficial, emphasizing that UUCMS plays a crucial role in shaping higher education. However, he did not acknowledge the significant issues universities have faced with the system.
UUCMS facilitates university functions such as admissions, examinations, and issuing digital mark sheets via DigiLocker. However, glitches have plagued its implementation. Syndicate member Nitin Shetty noted that students have frequently protested against UUCMS due to difficulties with mark cards, refunds, and processing results. He expressed hope that the upgrade would make it more student-friendly.
The system’s problems include unauthorized fee deductions, refund delays, result processing failures, and restrictions on course retention for colleges, forcing institutions to reapply. Admissions have also been disrupted when new courses are introduced.
While the upgrade promises improvements, students and faculty remain cautious, hoping for a more reliable and student-centric system.
