On Sunday, intense downpours combined with fierce winds battered several regions of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, leading to two tragic fatalities and extensive property damage.
In Sullia taluk’s Nalkur village, 62-year-old Rukmini from Chatrapady lost her life when a tree branch struck her as she was working outside her home. She had just returned the day before and is survived by her son and two daughters.
Another fatal incident occurred in Hejamady, Udupi, where 87-year-old Jayanti M Kanchan of Palimaru Padu slipped in her yard and succumbed to injuries.
The Kumaradhara bathing ghat at Subrahmanya has remained underwater for three consecutive days. Heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats has swollen the Nethravathi river, submerging farmlands and low-lying areas in Sarapady and Maninalkuru. In Puttur taluk, a fallen tree blocked the Patemajalu road, halting traffic.
At Kallugundi’s Nellikumeri KFDC colony, an electricity pole crashed onto Dinesh’s house, damaging its structure. On the Maani-Mysuru highway near Beejadakatte in Gunadka, a massive tree brought traffic to a standstill until it was removed.
In Sampaje, an areca palm fell on Sheelavati’s roof, while another tree collapse at Amemane in Nalkur injured Kushalappa on the face. His family members escaped harm.
Schools in Dakshina Kannada have already observed seven rain holidays, while parts of Udupi like Byndoor have marked eight. Full-day classes on Saturdays have been proposed to make up for lost time.
Several villages faced two days of blackout due to damaged power infrastructure. The IMD has issued an orange alert for July 28 and 29, urging residents to stay alert.
