Mangaluru: A new Tulu film, ‘Doctra Bhatra?’, blending comedy with a clash of science and tradition, was officially launched on Sunday morning at the historic Kadri Shri Manjunatha Temple in Mangaluru.
Launch ceremony
The film is produced by Dr M N Rajendra Kumar under the MNR Productions banner and directed by acclaimed Tulu dramatist and filmmaker Vijay Kumar Kodialbail.
The first clap for the movie was performed by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Dr AJ Shetty of AJ Hospital, and Dr Rajendra Kumar himself, who extended their blessings and best wishes to the production team.
Cultural significance
Addressing a press conference, producer Dr Rajendra Kumar said,
“With Doctra Bhatra?, we are returning to cinema with humour and cultural relevance. I urge the Tulu-speaking community to continue supporting regional films.”
Dr AJ Shetty lauded the initiative, calling it a significant effort to preserve the Tulu language and promote local storytelling.
Director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail, known for his acclaimed work in Tulu theatre and cinema, described the film as a light-hearted entertainer with a meaningful narrative.
“It is about the ideological tug-of-war between modern science and traditional beliefs, told through comedy. We want people to laugh while also reflecting on the themes,” he said.
Cast and production details
Veteran Tulu actor Naveen D Padil will play the central character ‘Bhatra’. The film’s music will be composed by Manikanth Kadri. A 30-day shoot has been scheduled in and around Neermarga on the outskirts of Mangaluru.
Production will be managed by Prem Shetty Surathkal of Prem Shetty Films, along with entrepreneur Jayaprakash Thumbe.
Community participation
The launch event was attended by several prominent figures from the Tulu film and theatre fraternity, including Prakash Pandeshwar, Dr Devadas Kapikad, Sharmila Kapikad, R Dhanaraj, Shashiraj Kavoor, and K K Pejavar.
