Mangaluru: The Moodbidri police have apprehended two individuals in connection with two recent chain snatching cases, recovering stolen gold valued at Rs 2.5 lakh. The suspects are identified as 42-year-old Habib Hassan, also known as Habbi or Chembugudde Habbi from Permannur village, and 29-year-old Ummar Siaf, alias Chia, from Bantwal.
Hassan is a known serial offender with 44 prior cases against him, while Siaf has been implicated in an attempted murder case at Bantwal Police Station. Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal reported that the first incident occurred on August 15, when the two snatched a 24-gram gold chain from 70-year-old Nirmala Pandit near Vivekananda Nagar in Marpadi village. The second incident took place on September 2, when they snatched a gold chain weighing three sovereigns from Prema near Basadi in Moodu Marnadu village.
Both cases were documented at the Moodbidri Police Station. In addition to the recovered gold, police also seized a scooter believed to have been used in the crimes, which was reported stolen from the Mangaluru East Police Station area.
Habib Hassan has been evading court trials, with 15 outstanding arrest warrants issued against him across various police jurisdictions, including Moodbidri, Surathkal, Ullal, Mulki, Konaje, and Karkala Rural in Udupi district.
