MANGALURU: Two separate road accidents in Dakshina Kannada district claimed two lives and left two others injured on Tuesday and Wednesday, raising renewed concerns over road safety in the region.

Woman killed in car-tanker collision near Sullia

A fatal accident occurred on Wednesday on the National Highway near Kodapala in Sampaje village, Sullia taluk, involving a tanker lorry and a car.

The deceased has been identified as Shobha (47), wife of Ponnappa, a resident of Nellihudikeri in Siddapur, Madikeri. According to the police, the collision took place when a tanker lorry heading from Madikeri to Sullia collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

Shobha, who was travelling in the car, succumbed to her injuries on the spot. The car’s driver, Devayya (54), and his wife Vanajakshi (44) sustained injuries in the accident. They received initial treatment at a private hospital in Sullia before being referred to a hospital in Mangaluru for further medical care.

The Sullia Police have registered a case under Sections 281, 125(a), and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Pedestrian fatally hit by bus in Mangaluru

In another tragic incident, a pedestrian lost his life after being hit by a private bus near AB Shetty Circle in Mangaluru on Tuesday evening.

The complainant, identified as Vajraksha, who was travelling in the bus, stated that around 4:40 p.m., as the bus approached AB Shetty Circle, the driver Anwar Hussain allegedly drove in a negligent and reckless manner. Failing to notice a pedestrian crossing the road from the Dargah side towards Nehru Maidan, the bus hit the individual.

The pedestrian fell on the road and sustained severe injuries, including bleeding from the ear. With the assistance of passers-by, the injured person was immediately shifted to Wenlock Hospital. However, despite medical attention, the pedestrian succumbed to injuries later the same evening.

Growing concerns over road safety

Both incidents highlight the persistent challenges of road safety in Dakshina Kannada district, where accidents on highways and within city limits remain frequent. While police investigations are underway, residents and commuters have once again called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and greater accountability among drivers to prevent such tragedies.
