A two-year-old child was rushed to the emergency unit at KMC Hospital’s Shri Krishna facility in Kakkinje after a coffee-flavored candy choked in his throat, making it difficult for him to breathe. His anxious family acted swiftly, reaching the hospital within a crucial 15-minute window.
Upon arrival, medical experts immediately took charge. Dr. Jeedhu Radhakrishnan, head of emergency services, stated, “Our team, in coordination with Shri Krishna Hospital, responded rapidly and successfully rescued the child. When he was brought in, he appeared pale, gasping for air, and had dangerously low oxygen levels. The emergency unit promptly assessed the situation and confirmed that the sweet was obstructing his airway.”
Doctors initiated a specialized choking intervention. Despite their initial attempts, the blockage remained. However, with persistent back slaps and abdominal thrusts, the candy was eventually dislodged along with vomit. The moment the obstruction was cleared, the child’s breathing returned to normal, and he was no longer in danger.
To ensure complete recovery, he was admitted for observation. His vital signs are being closely tracked, and he is receiving fluids and necessary medication. X-ray scans confirmed that no remnants remained in his airway.
Dr. Murli Krishna Irwathraya emphasized that the emergency center plays a vital role in managing critical cases, including cardiac events, strokes, snake bites, and trauma. Meanwhile, KMC’s regional COO, Saghir Siddiqui, stressed that choking is among the most frequent medical emergencies in young children.
