
Udupi District’s Beloved Police Dog ‘Icon’ Retires After 10 Years of Service
The Udupi district police bid a fond farewell to ‘Icon,’ a Labrador Retriever dog, who has officially retired after a distinguished career spanning 10 years and 25 days in the explosive detection unit. Icon, born on August 5, 2014, joined the canine division on November 5, 2014, under the expert supervision of handler Ganesh M.
Icon underwent an intensive nine-month training program in explosive detection at CAR South Adugodi, from November 25, 2014, to August 30, 2015. Post-training, Icon was deployed across Udupi district and beyond, playing a pivotal role in over 417 special duties. His services were instrumental in ensuring security during high-profile visits from the President, Prime Ministers, chief ministers, foreign dignitaries, and other VIPs. His contributions extended to major events, including the Air Show, G-20 Summit, Datta Jayanti, international cricket matches, the Sagar Kavach exercise, and routine security duties at Malpe Port, Kaup Lighthouse, Manipal University, and railway stations. Notably, Icon was involved in detecting a crude bomb in Brahmavar.
On February 22, 2020, Icon was honored with a silver medal at the Police Duty Meet, a testament to his dedication and service. The retirement ceremony was graced by Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K, IPS, and other esteemed district officers.
