Upa Lokayukta Urges Government Doctors Stop Prescribing External Medicines

On Monday, Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa emphasized that doctors in government hospitals must not prescribe medicines to be purchased from outside under any circumstances. Speaking at a Lokayukta public grievance meeting held at the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, he stressed that government hospitals should provide treatment entirely free of cost. During his surprise visits, Justice Veerappa discovered instances where doctors were prescribing medications that patients were asked to buy privately. He pointed out that if a specific medicine is unavailable in a government hospital, it can be procured through government funds, up to Rs 25,000 per day.

He further stated that government hospitals are equipped with good infrastructure, primarily serving the poor, and urged doctors to show humanity by refraining from prescribing outside medications. Justice Veerappa also directed that contact numbers for Lokayukta authorities, both district and state levels, should be prominently displayed in all government hospitals and offices. These measures would help the public report grievances directly to the Lokayukta.

In his speech, Justice Veerappa also criticized private healthcare institutions for charging exorbitant fees, with some charging Rs 1 to 2 lakh for daycare facilities. He noted that while corruption is difficult to eradicate, it is important to resist it. “Women in every household should raise their voices against corruption,” he added, stressing that wealth gained through corruption cannot bring true happiness.
