Mangaluru: In a tragic incident that has sparked widespread concern, Mohammed Ashraf, a native of Pulupally in Wayanad, Kerala, was confirmed as the victim of a mob attack near Kudupu in Mangaluru on Sunday. The incident has drawn swift political and community response, and the body has now been repatriated to Kerala.
Identity confirmed, family responds
Following the confirmation of Ashraf’s identity, Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader immediately contacted AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Wayanad MLA T. Siddique to initiate formalities for handing over the body. Responding to the call, Ashraf’s brother Abdul Jabbar, along with other family members, travelled overnight to Mangaluru and identified the deceased.
Religious rites held at Zeenath Baksh Masjid
The body was taken to the Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid located in the Mangaluru port area, where traditional Islamic bathing rites were performed. The Mayyith Namaz (funeral prayer) was conducted before the remains were sent to his hometown in Wayanad. At around 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Ashraf’s body was escorted by police personnel back to Kerala for the final rites.
Community and political leaders extend support
The incident prompted immediate support from local leaders and community figures. Under the guidance of U.T. Khader, several Congress leaders and volunteers stayed with the family through the night, offering logistical and emotional support.
