Mangaluru: The Gender Sensitization Cell and Eco-Club of Yenepoya Pharmacy College & Research Centre, a constituent of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), observed the International Day of Yoga and Van Mahotsav by organising a week-long yoga programme for inmates of the District Sub-Jail, Kodialbail, culminating in a tree plantation drive on July 5.

As part of the celebrations, dignitaries and inmates jointly planted saplings, reinforcing the message of environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Yoga promotes rehabilitation and emotional well-being

The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Sumana Sharan, Advocate and Member of the Juvenile Justice Board, Mangaluru, who served as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, she said that not every prisoner is a criminal by nature and emphasised that while prisons provide basic necessities such as food, shelter, and security, true rehabilitation requires programmes that foster positive thinking and personal transformation.

She noted that initiatives such as yoga, creative arts, sports, and counselling play a vital role in building resilience and helping inmates reintegrate into society. She also thanked the prison authorities for facilitating the programme.

Guest of Honour Mr. Sharanabasappa, Superintendent of the District Sub-Jail, highlighted the therapeutic benefits of yoga in correctional institutions. He said regular yoga practice helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, improves emotional stability and impulse control, minimises violent behaviour, and promotes mental, physical, and emotional healing among inmates.

Institution highlights commitment to community outreach

Presiding over the programme, Dr. Mohammed Gulzar Ahmed, Principal and Dean of Yenepoya Pharmacy College & Research Centre, highlighted the institution’s commitment to community service through its various committees and student clubs.

He said the Gender Sensitization Cell and other institutional forums translate the values of equity, dignity, and human rights into meaningful community outreach initiatives. He congratulated the organising committee for successfully conducting the programme and appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the inmates. He also requested the prison authorities to continue collaborating on similar initiatives for the welfare of inmates.

Programme concludes with tree plantation

The programme was organised under the leadership of Dr. Prajitha Biju, Organising Chairperson, who welcomed the gathering, while Mrs. Fathima, Organising Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.

Committee members Mrs. Mubeena, Mrs. Krishna Priya, and Ms. Suraksha were also present during the programme.

The event concluded with a sapling plantation drive involving guests and inmates, marking Van Mahotsav and reinforcing the importance of environmental stewardship alongside holistic rehabilitation.
