Mangaluru: Reinforcing its commitment to excellence in healthcare education, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), through the Yenepoya Centre for Allied and Healthcare Education (Yen-CAHE), organised a three-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Transforming Teaching and Learning with Competency-Based Education” from June 25 to 27, 2026.

The programme, hosted by Yen-CAHE, a Nodal Training Centre of the Karnataka State Allied and Healthcare Council (KSAHC), brought together faculty members from Allied Health Science institutions across Karnataka and Maharashtra. It aimed to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools required to effectively implement competency-based education (CBE), learner-centred teaching methodologies, and competency-driven assessment practices.
Focus on competency-based healthcare education
The Faculty Development Programme was inaugurated by Dr. K. S. Gangadhara Somayaji, Vice Chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), in the presence of Dr. B. H. Sripathi Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor, and Dr. Rashmi Jain, Deputy Director, Centre for Faculty Development.
Dr. Sunita Saldanha, Dean, Faculty of Allied and Healthcare Professions and Chairperson of Yen-CAHE, served as the Organising Chairperson, while Mrs. Averil Rebello, Coordinator of Yen-CAHE, was the Organising Secretary.
The dignitaries highlighted the importance of continuous faculty development and institutional preparedness for implementing the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) competency-based curriculum framework. They emphasised that strengthening faculty capabilities is essential for delivering quality healthcare education aligned with evolving national standards.
Hands-on training and collaborative learning
A key highlight of the programme was the active participation of faculty members representing diverse Allied Health disciplines from institutions across Karnataka and Maharashtra. The FDP provided an interactive platform for educators to exchange best practices, engage in collaborative learning, and develop practical competencies in curriculum planning, teaching methodologies, and assessment strategies.
The academic sessions covered a wide range of contemporary topics, including the NCAHP framework for Allied Health Education, Bloom’s Taxonomy, formulation of measurable learning outcomes, lesson planning and session design, integration of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare education, effective educational presentations, large and small group teaching methods, skills training models, competency-based assessment techniques, assessment blueprinting, and structured feedback methods.
Participants also received hands-on training in Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX), Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), and microteaching exercises followed by structured feedback sessions.
Strengthening healthcare education
The organisers noted that the initiative marks an important milestone in advancing competency-based education in the allied and healthcare professions under the Karnataka State Allied and Healthcare Council.
The programme also reaffirmed Yenepoya (Deemed to be University)’s leadership in promoting excellence in healthcare education, faculty capacity building, and professional development, while supporting the implementation of competency-based curricula across Allied Health institutions.
