Mangaluru: The Department of Physical Education at Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) hosted a grand felicitation ceremony on 21st July 2025 to honour the institution’s top-performing student-athletes for the academic year 2024–25. Held at the Deralakatte campus at 12:00 PM, the event marked a historic moment in the university’s sporting journey, celebrating its best-ever national-level performance.
The event was presided over by the Hon’ble Chancellor Dr. Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, in the presence of Vice Chancellor Dr. M. Vijayakumar, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. B.H. Sripathi Rao, Registrar Dr. K.S. Gangadhara Somayaji, Controller of Examinations Dr. B.T. Nandish, and Sports Committee Chairman Dr. Amar Lobo. Also in attendance were deans, principals, faculty, and physical directors.
The event began with introductory remarks from Mr. Sujith K.V., Director of Physical Education, who welcomed the gathering. The Chancellor then delivered the presidential address, followed by the presentation of cash awards, mementos, and gift boxes to all the achievers. Medal winners from the All India Inter University competitions were specially honoured in traditional Karnataka style.
Exceptional milestones at national competitions
The university celebrated an impressive array of individual and team achievements that marked a turning point in its sporting legacy.
- Ms. Nandana, a first-year student of Library Science, made history by securing Yenepoya University’s first-ever Gold Medal at the AIU All India Inter University Powerlifting Championship 2024–25, held at the University of Kashmir, Srinagar.
- Mr. Sym Dev, a second-year student of B.A. in Sports Studies, earned a Bronze Medal at the AIU All India Inter University Best Physique Championship 2024–25, hosted by Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala.
- Mr. Rohit Soman (Library Science) qualified for the Khelo India National University Games in Fencing through his performance at the AIU All India Fencing Championship at the University of Jammu.
These achievements are viewed as a reflection of the university’s growing investment and commitment to sports.
Representation at national-level competitions
Beyond individual accomplishments, Yenepoya University also witnessed remarkable team participation in various national-level sporting events. In total, 19 students represented their states in major competitions:
- Kabaddi – 10 students
- Football – 4 students
- Fencing – 4 students
- Pencak Silat – 1 student
These participations underscore the university’s strong sporting ecosystem and the diverse talent nurtured across disciplines.
Acknowledging coaches and support staff
The felicitation ceremony also extended appreciation to both internal and external coaches, recognising their mentorship and guidance that played a critical role in shaping the university teams. Their efforts, alongside administrative support, have been instrumental in ensuring consistent training and peak performance from athletes.
