Uppinangady: In a tragic incident near Uppinangady, a 26-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after coming under a moving train near the Haradi bridge close to Kabaka Puttur railway station on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Pavan Kumar (26), a resident of Pulittadi near Uppinangady village.

Incident near Haradi bridge

According to available information, the incident occurred on February 20 when a train travelling from Mangaluru to Bengaluru was passing near the Haradi bridge, close to Kabaka Puttur railway station. The train pilot reportedly noticed that a person had come under the train and immediately alerted the station authorities.

Railway police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the body to Mangaluru for further procedures. At the time, the identity of the deceased was not immediately known.

Subsequently, it came to light that the deceased was Pavan Kumar of Pulittadi.

Alleged suicide, family informed

Sources said that Pavan had been working on a merchant ship but had not reported to duty for the past few months and had been staying at home. On Thursday afternoon, he reportedly left his residence after telling his mother that he intended to end his life.

Family members later stated that he had updated his Instagram display picture with the message “I am dead,” raising concerns about his mental state prior to the incident.

When Pavan did not return home, his mother grew anxious and informed former Uppinangady Gram Panchayat member Suresh Atramajalu. While making enquiries about his whereabouts, they received information about an unidentified body found on the railway track near Kabaka Puttur.

Upon verification with the authorities, it was confirmed that the body was that of Pavan Kumar.

Family background and suspected depression

Pavan belonged to a financially distressed family. Having lost his father at a young age, he was raised by his mother, who worked as a daily wage labourer to support his education and upbringing. His sister had reportedly discontinued her studies midway to take up work and contribute to the family’s income.

Preliminary enquiries suggest that Pavan may have been battling depression, which is suspected to have driven him to take the extreme step. However, officials stated that a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain all aspects surrounding the incident.

The railway police have registered a case of unnatural death and are conducting further enquiries.
