Senior Karnataka Congress MLA RV Deshpande has come under fire after making a controversial remark during a public interaction with a woman journalist about the lack of hospital facilities in Joida taluk, Uttara Kannada.
When the journalist highlighted that pregnant women in the region were struggling due to the absence of a hospital, Deshpande reportedly smiled and said, “Don’t worry, we’ll get yours done elsewhere.”
Taken aback, the journalist sought clarification, to which Deshpande repeated, “When it’s time for your delivery, we will get it done.” When pressed further about ensuring a hospital is built during his term, he replied briefly with “okay” without making any formal commitment, according to NDTV.
A video of the exchange has gone viral on social media, attracting strong criticism from the public and political leaders.
Political Reactions
The BJP condemned the remark, calling it disrespectful and insulting. BJP spokesperson Vijay Prasad stated:
“Insulting mothers and women is not politics, it’s moral bankruptcy. Congress’ leaders speak about love and respect but act differently. This double speak must be exposed.”
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla added that the incident echoed previous controversies, including abusive remarks against PM Modi’s mother during a Congress event in Bihar.
The Janata Dal (Secular) also condemned the comment, demanding an apology. In a post, the party said:
“To a senior journalist who asked for a super-specialty hospital for the district, you respond with ‘Let it be your delivery’? Is this the respect you show to women?”
Deshpande, a former state minister and MLA from Haliyal, has not yet issued a public apology.
