Nanjanagud: A total of 159 couples entered the wedlock during the annual six-day Jathra Mahothsav of Adijagadguru Sri Shivaratrishwara Shivayogi at Suttur, on the banks of Kabini River, in Nanjangud taluk on January 25.
In all, 2038 couples had married here before this annual fair and 17 couples belonged to special category this year in addition to 159 couples.
Among those who entered wedlock include 13 from Lingayath (Veerashaiva) community, 40 from backward community, 96 from scheduled caste and 10 from schedules tribes. Seven inter caste couples, five from Tamilnadu, one from Kerala, three physically challenged couples, one belonging to widow-widower group were classified in special category taking the total to 17 couples.
More than 25 lakh people from across the country and even from foreign countries are expected to take part in the 6 day long fair. Last year 20 lakh people had taken part in the jathra.
