Parents of students completing school in Mysuru are facing a barrage of daily calls from coaching centres and educational institutions—many from outside the district—promising elite academic programmes for their children. With rising demand for integrated courses over traditional board education in urban pockets, this trend has left families overwhelmed.
Admissions began as early as November, with several students securing seats even before exam results were announced. The cost of these integrated programmes in Mysuru spans from ₹80,000 to ₹2.2 lakh, adding to the confusion and pressure on parents.
MS Santhosh Kumar, Mysuru district coordinator of the Karnataka Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools, revealed that student contact data often circulates through networks involving schools, tuitions, and scholarship bodies. He noted that institutes now start marketing aggressively ahead of board exams to beat competitors and fill seats in advance.
Many institutions also began offering their own coaching under the “integrated” label, fearing that external coaching centres would claim success for high-performing students in PU board exams.
Santhosh Kumar urged parents to assess their children’s interests and abilities rather than falling for flashy marketing or hefty price tags. He noted that most coaching institutes focus their top resources only on students scoring 90% and above, to boost their brand image.
AC Manjegowda of the Karnataka State PU Lecturers’ Association cautioned parents against such traps, adding that some private colleges even hire inexperienced graduates as faculty.
DDPU M Mariswamy stated that Mysuru has 265 PU colleges, with private ones needing special permission for integrated courses. However, arrangements between colleges and coaching centres are not under department purview.
