Mysuru: Renowned writer and Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq has expressed heartfelt gratitude for being chosen to inaugurate the upcoming Mysuru Dasara festival, calling it one of the happiest and most meaningful moments of her life.

A personal journey to the stage

Mushtaq, recalling her childhood memories, said the invitation carried deep personal significance. “My father was employed at Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS), and during Dasara, every year I used to go with the family. I have witnessed the procession of Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. I never had any thought that one day I would be inaugurating it,” she said.

For Mushtaq, what was once an annual family outing has now become a historic personal milestone.

Dasara as Karnataka’s Nada Habba

Describing Dasara as the Nada Habba (state festival) of Karnataka, Mushtaq emphasised its cultural importance. “It is an occasion of inclusiveness and unity. That is why it is special, because it is an occasion where the government has shown the inclusiveness of all the people of Karnataka,” she said.

She pointed out that the festival is known for allowing women and members of marginalised communities to play a central role, reflecting its democratic and inclusive spirit.

Inclusivity in focus

Mushtaq also touched upon the larger social message behind the government’s choice. “Due to the recent policies of various governments, I have witnessed discrimination against particular groups, communities, sects, castes, and creeds. But in the choice made by the Karnataka government, they have surpassed all these discriminations. There is solidarity among the people,” she observed.

By inviting her to inaugurate the celebration, she noted, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity, honouring diverse communities and womanhood.

Celebration of culture and heritage

Mushtaq highlighted that Dasara is not just a festival but also a celebration of Kannada culture and the rich heritage of the Mysuru Maharajas. “It is a celebration of Kannada culture, and at the same time, the heritage of the Mysuru Maharajas is prevailing,” she added.

Looking ahead

The announcement has been widely welcomed, with many viewing Mushtaq’s role as a recognition of literary excellence and a progressive step towards celebrating cultural inclusivity. The inauguration is expected to set the tone for this year’s grand festivities in Mysuru, which attract visitors from across India and abroad.

Conclusion

With Banu Mushtaq inaugurating the Mysuru Dasara, the 2025 edition of Karnataka’s Nada Habba is set to highlight unity, inclusivity, and cultural pride, blending tradition with a message of social harmony.
