Canines leave Mysureans spellbound at National Dog Show

Mysuru: From Afghan hounds to Chinese Chow-Chow and Shih Tzu, the city had a opportunity to witness over 30 breeds from various parts of the world during the National Dog Show that was organised by Canine Club of Mysuru at Scouts and Guides ground here on Sunday. More than 350 dogs took part in the championship. Some were cute, mushy and adorable while some were ferocious, yet each one of them attracted people.

German shepherds, Labradors, Rottweilers, Great Danes from across the country fought it out to win the trophy. The animals were divided into different classes including best puppy in the show, best of breed and line up. Being held on Sunday the show attracted a large gathering of canine lovers. The foreign breeds including pug, poodle, Doberman, Labrador, dash hound, boxer, St Bernard, Great Dane, German shepherd, Dalmatian and Rottweiler and Indian breeds like Mudhol hound and its varieties like Pashme and Caravan were seen enthralling the onlookers. The objective of the event was to encourage more people to raise dogs as they are beneficial to people in many ways. The dogs besides a great companion and loyal to their owners, also do the great job as guard to the property.

The Afghan bound brought by its owner Sunil V Gowda from Vijaynagar, Bengaluru was the most expensive breed at the championship. The male dog which is four and half year old is worth between Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh. Sunil V Gowda said that he has eight dogs including two Afghan hound, St Bernard and Great Dane. The overall maintenance for these dogs is nearly Rs 80,000 per month; among these dogs the maintenance of Afghan hound is expensive, which goes up to Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 for its maintenance.

“The four and half year old Afghan hound which is taking part in the championship has won more than 30 national events. The dog is different from other dogs; for a puppy it cost Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. It’s a hairy breed and used for hunting. In days to come I am planning to campaign Afghan hound for international event,” said Gowda.

Dr D Yunis Pasha from Channapatna who had brought one and half year old Chinese based ‘Shih Tzu’ dog. Pasha has 12 dogs including nine Shih Tzu and other prominent breeds for the past 20 years and spends nearly Rs 50,000 per month for its maintenance.

MLA Vasu, MLC Marithibbegowda, Deputy Mayor Rathna Lakshman, Mallige Veeresh, Chairperson, Zoo Authority of Karnataka, former minister A Ramasas, D Dhruvakumar, Chairman, Mysuru Urban Development Authority, B Siddaraju, Chairman, Karnataka Exhibition Authority, BP Manjunath, President of Canine Club of Mysuru were also present.
