Mysuru: Close to six decades after the PG campus of Manasagangotri was set up, the University of Mysore will now supply Cauvery water to the students there.

The varsity was depending on borewells and had not taken the water connection from the Mysore City Corporation (MCC). Faced with water scarcity, it had approached the MCC to supply it with Cauvery water. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah too had directed the civic body to extend the facility to the students. Including UG hostels, there are 19 hostels run by UoM. Among 19 hostels, six are for post graduation students, three for men and three for women while rest are for UG students. Altogether last year, 3896 students got admitted to these hostels. Providing Cauvery water to all the hostels was also confirmed by Bharathi, Registrar, University of Mysore.

Especially during summer, most of these hostels used to face water problems. Last month when students belonging to PG Hostel at Manasagangotri campus complained of water woes, Dayanand Mane, In-charge Vice Chancellor, himself visited these hostels and assured to solve their long pending problems. As a time gap adjustment, he provided mineral drinking water through cans. After the issue was brought to the notice of chief minister, he called upon the authorities to provide Cauvery water to all the hostels.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, Rudraiah, Dean, University of Mysore said, “Every year during summer most of the hostels used to face water problems. Last year, the borewells of two hostels went completely dry putting students and officials into a lot of problem. Few days ago our registrar Bharathi had sent a representation to the corporation commissioner requesting him to provide Cauvery water to all the hostels. Already the Cauvery water pipeline is there at Gangothri campus. They just need to open it and give connection. Hope in a couple of weeks or months, the much needed Cauvery water will be provided to all the hostels”.
