Mysuru: More than century old life-size statues of Postman and Policeman which were installed by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in front of office of the Commandant Mounted Company Mysuru on Race Course Road will be shifted.
Due to the widening of roads and safety of the century old statue which was installed by Krishnaraja Wadiyar in recognition of the outstanding work by Postman Basappa and Policeman Bhujangarao Jagadale will be shifted based on the Heritage Area Development Committee report. The District Heritage Committee headed by Deputy Commissioner D Randeep has taken a decision to this effect.
Speaking to Newskarnataka, Deputy Commissioner D Randeep said, “We had a discussion in the last heritage meeting. First of all, it is very close to the road. Sometimes due to vibration during heavy traffic, the statues may be affected. Over the period of 15 to 20 years both the statues will also become brittle. Apart from this, if any drunkards or unscrupulous elements come and hit the statue, we will lose such valuable and historical statues. Based on my direction, a sub committee was formed which involved heritage experts. The experts after seeing the ground reality and in view of its safety, requested us to shift the statue near to the office but it will be visible to public from the road. Once it is shifted, it will be safe as it will be inside the compound”.
The policeman statue was installed in 1905 while two years later, i.e, in 1907, the postman statue was installed.
The heritage committee has given an estimate for shifting both the statues to Mounted Police and they will take a call whether to take up the shifting work on their own or give the estimated money to heritage department to take up the work.
